Sleeve Gastrectomy is a minimally invasive procedure recommended for obese adults.
Also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, it involves reducing the size of the stomach to about 25% of its original size. In certain cases, the surgeon may also remove the fundus – which produces the ghrelin hormone responsible for appetite.
Sleeve gastrectomy is done not only to reduce excess weight but also to reduce the risk of various comorbidities like heart disease, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, stroke, cancer, infertility, etc., and if your BMI is above 40.
Sleeve Gastrectomy is a minimally invasive procedure. The surgeon makes 3 to 5 small incisions on the abdominal region through which a laparoscope, a flexible optic tube with a camera attached to its end, is inserted. With the help of miniature surgical instruments through other incisions, the surgeon removes about 80% of the stomach. The rest of the stomach looks like a tube and will be of the size and shape of a banana.
It may take up to a year to achieve the desired weight loss.
