Double Valve Replacement is a highly complex and complicated surgical procedure where the patient requires the replacement of both mitral and aortic valves. It is not a routine surgical procedure owing to various risk factors and is recommended only in difficult cases. The four coronary valves – mitral, aortic, pulmonary, and tricuspid valves play a crucial role in the functioning of the heart. When these valves do not function to their optimum capacity and do not open and shut properly, that needs to be a reduction in the blood supply, making the heart grow weaker. A leakage or regurgitation of the valve makes it ever more complicated for the patient causing symptoms like severe dizziness, shortness of breath, fainting, etc.
Patients suffering from valvular heart disease would need a DVR to replace both mitral and aortic valves.
Double Valve Replacement is performed under general anesthesia. In most cases, it will be an open-heart surgery. The surgeon would make a long incision to access the valves and replace them with new ones. The heart will be connected to a heart-lung bypass machine to keep the blood circulating through the body.
In the case of minimally invasive technique, the surgeon would go for smaller incisions to access the heart and replace the valves. The surgeon may use an allograft, or a homograft carved out of tissue from a human donor’s heart. Other valves include a porcine valve made from pig tissue and a bovine valve made from cow tissue.
These valves are connected to the heart with silicone rubber.
DVR surgery is not very common and is often the last resort to save and restore heart functioning.
